When: Friday night
Where: MadLabs then Common
What: Every good hack / art meets science event starts with a beer and pizza social, and BodyBeats was no different. As the city started to swell with weekend joie de vivre, we gathered together some creatives from all areas of expertise to discuss the beginning of the BodyBeats project. Armed with instruments, Arduino and good ideas, our participants eagerly dug into the pizza courtesy of one of the Northern Quarter’s finest independents. Organisers Stephen and Lamiece from the Health eResearch Centre gave an introduction as to what the project was about and what the aim of the next day was. After the formalities were over, people mingled into the evening and into the neighbourhood, to reconvene the next morning.
When: Saturday morning
What: After the group got back together again the following morning, it was straight down to business. The brief was to make an Arduino-based product, capable of translating health data into music. Matt and Gemma from MadLabs guided people through how to start coding.
There were some people that were already using Arduino, so didn’t need much assistance in getting started straight away. Beginners were soon brought up to speed, and then the creative juices started flowing.
Over the day, some brilliant concepts were invented, concepts discussed and future products thought about. Here are some of those ideas.
